We are excited to present the 1st Annual Black Theatre Festival at the Light House Arts Centre during the celebration of the 1st Annual UBAS Block Party!
On August 6, 2023, the festival will showcase 7 emerging Black playwrights and will be filmed to be live streamed. In addition, attendees will enjoy special music from the original musical “Love, Peace and Hairgrease”, written by Tara Taylor, nominated for “Outstanding Production” at the Robert Merritt Awards; performed by Kailin Glasgow, Jupiter Reign and Anthony Bryan.
Produced in collaboration with Eastern Front Theatre:
LOVE, PEACE & HAIRGREASE is a play about love and transformation that celebrates afro-textured hair, old and new thoughts and techniques. When Lauren Johnson takes over the legacy of her grandmothers’ salon and renames it Love, Piece and Hairgrease (an Ebonics term meaning “bye”) the venture comes at a great personal cost. When they told her she couldn’t, she did it anyway. How does one find love and peace in the midst of hairgrease life storms? Say bye to fear, old habits, wigs, weaves, and stressed HAIR!
Hood Habits is the graphic true story of inner city realities and proof that if given a chance; given opportunities and unconditional love, the human spirit will soar like an eagle. Can Flex break free from the hood life and become a star despite all the odds against him? It’s a story of survival, it’s a story of reclaiming one’s childhood, revaluing ones inner being and restoring their pride.
